Frequently asked questions

Everything you might wonder before you post a bill or start swiping.

What is get billy?

A playful app built on one idea: you post your bills, and bored billionaires swipe right to pay them. It works like a dating app, except every match is a bill getting paid.

What does "In a world of Musks, be a Medici" mean?

The Medici's were a Renaissance banking family remembered for backing artists like Botticelli and Michelangelo. The tagline nudges today’s billionaires and millionaires to be patrons too.

Lorenzo de' Medici took a teenage Michelangelo into his own household, and his grandfather Cosimo supported artists like Donatello. That kind of backing helped spark one of history's great bursts of creativity.

Being a patron today doesn't have to mean paying for a cathedral. On get billy, it can be as simple as covering someone's rent or electricity bill so they can get on with their lives.

Does real money change hands?

Not yet. get billy is just for fun right now. Swiping right doesn't pay anything, and nobody is ever charged.

Are the billionaires real?

No. Everyone swiping is pretend for now, and the bills already in the deck are examples.

How do I post a bill?

Tap I have bills, then add your first name, the bill type, the amount, the due date and a short pitch. A photo is optional. Tap Post my bill and it goes to the front of the deck.

How do I swipe?

On I'm a bored billionaire, swipe a bill right (or tap the heart) to pay it, or swipe left (or tap ✕) to pass. The round arrow undoes your last swipe. On a computer, the left and right arrow keys work too.

How do you know the bills are real?

Right now we don't check, because get billy is just for fun and no real money moves.

Before real payments start, the plan is:

  • Pay the company, not the person. Money would go straight to the utility, landlord or lender that sent the bill, so a made-up bill gets nobody anything.
  • Confirm who's posting. Everyone who posts a bill would verify their identity, and the name on the bill would need to match.
  • Review every bill. A real person would check each bill before it goes live, with a limit on how much a single bill can be.
Who can see the bills I post?

Only you, on the phone or computer you posted from. Your bills are saved in your browser and never sent anywhere. Clearing your browser data deletes them.

What happens to my email if I join Billy's list?

It's stored with our website host, Netlify, and used only to tell you about get billy. We don't sell it or share it.

Should I upload a photo of my real bill?

You don't need to. If you do, cover your account number, address and anything else private before you take the photo.

How do I add get billy to my home screen?
  • iPhone: open paymybilly.com in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android: open paymybilly.com in Chrome and tap Install app, or use the ⋮ menu and choose Install app.

It opens full screen with Billy's coin as the icon, and works offline.

I ran out of bills. Now what?

Tap Start over to shuffle the deck back, or post a bill of your own.

What does "In billy we trust" mean?

It's Billy's motto, stamped on his coin. Billy is the little smiling coin who cheers you on every time a bill gets paid.

Will get billy ever pay real bills?

Maybe one day. Doing it for real means secure payments, verified accounts and identity checks for everyone involved, so it isn't part of the app yet.
